In the heart of New York's diverse neighborhoods sits the East Village. It's filled with your quaint restaurants, little parks, artists, coffee shops and thrift stores. Not to mention a lot of college students from NYU. The fashion is excellent and the people are friendly and collaborative. Rebekah and I spent a week there with my cousin and her husband in their apartment on 2nd  & 10th St. I went there on a photography job that I will talk about in an upcoming post.  Here is a photo I took on my first night there.

Seeking out some form of isolation and alone time is what a lot of New Yorkers look for in their off time. Because there is so much going on with so many different people around, it can be distracting and hard to focus. I guess that's why I like taking pictures of isolated environments where you know people should be. It gives me that relaxing feeling without distractions and allows my mind to go places far within the photo. Compared to Portland, New York has a more collaborative community between artists, models and freelance workers. It's because most people did not originate from there and needed help to get where they are now. They recognize the joy and benefits of helping people "make it". I love that and wish people everywhere had the same mindset.  Here's to the city that never sleeps. See you next time.

Yes, I'm now thirty (as of Aug 15th).

Yes, I still ride a skateboard, snowboard, surfboard, dress funny and have tattoos.

Things I still love:

Being married, coffee, beer, travel, culture, music, adventure sports, movies, chips & salsa, art, fashion, clouds, ocean, our pets. Ok, the list goes on forever.

How do I see the world now at thirty? Well, most of the time it's viewed through a pair of sunglasses, windows from the house, driving in a car and like a excited kid with questions. Obviously, that is literal but so much changes depending on what perspective and environment you are looking out from. Sometimes, life whizzes past you like scenery and other times you just want to stop and look at it a little more carefully, whether it's somewhere removed or right up close. I ponder these things because there's always so much to see. I prefer it this way so I can learn to look, observe and really see beyond the surface of things. I see the world and my life as a place where both undeserved blessings and struggles always happen. But I try to embrace that. Embracing my weaknesses, adventures, awkwardness, challenges, passions, individuality and the things that are "me" will keep me living and not just existing. My heart's desire is to have real community, grow closer with the Lord, my wife, family and friends. I want to be used in the world fully for God's glory and to stay young at heart. So here's to joining the ranks of the adults. Stay young at heart, adventurous and be blessed everyone.
